Kerr 84.41-1

Join Roman and Simon as we do our best to test the listings made by Kerr and later by Chan. What has been missed? Which overprints have been assigned to the wrong towns? What is genuine and what is suspect? - You get the idea......

I believe I have it. I think it would be in my exhibit. Next time I start to go through it, which will be very soon, I'll tell you.
I'll try to send you a pic too.

I doubt it, in fact I was going to list it as one of my Mythical Overprints but you beat me to it. I have seen several good collections and that stamp is always missing. Go on George - prove us wrong!

Same for me, in all collections I saw it was missing. But when I saw it in a collection it was mixed up with a similar stamp, like Kerr 200.11 (SUI HWA)

The missing 1f stamp with the black overprint is useful in that it tells us the black overprint came after the red/vermillion version. This confirms the order of Kerr's listing, Chan lists them in the reverse order which, based upon the missing (or very scarce) 1fen stamp I suspect is wrong.

When they changed to black stocks of the 1f stamp must have run out, if not, only a very small number could have been available for overprinting.

I have only seen the 50f version of this stamp used on covers and it is difficult to see a postal use for the 1f stamp (or any use other than for sale to dealers).

If you look carefully you can see many overprinted 1f stamps in vermilion have a black shadow (and funny, the black shadow is only on 1f as for the first stamp of the set), so your idea the black surcharge was second is possible but I think not very likely. Earliest stamps cancelled on cover I have for vermilion 50f March and for black 50f April, both 1946. But I think both colors were used parallel.

Why the black 1f is possible not exists is a good question. In March or April 1946 most overprinted stamps can't be use anymore for any valid postal rate ... but why there were still overprinted? For collectors? This question you can ask for most of the MLOs, so maybe there was an administrative rule to overprint all stamps they have regardless if they can be use ever as postal stamps?

Yimianpo was a large (2nd Class) post office and on covers you can find two different types of cancels. Maybe the post in Yimianpo had a suboffice which mainly use black overprint but they run out for 1f stamps? (ok, I'm getting very speculative now). :)

At the moment I can't explain the missing of the 1f in any logical way.

I have never come across Kerr 84.54. Chan lists it but probably did no original research. Booklet Panes are scarce and most collections show very few of them. It might exist.

Very nice set of scarce Booklet Panes. We will wait to see if anyone can come up with the missing 4f with the soft black overprint.
