Any suggestions for UV lamps?

Post by xiaomid0 » Sun Oct 29, 2017 5:28 pm

I have some PRC Chairman Mao stamps that I need to verify for the collection. I've already checked the paper, perforation, color, and printing method of the stamps. Everything seems to be fine, but I would like to use a UV lamp for a final verdict. Any suggestions for some quality UV lamps?

You need a strong UV lamp (at least 8W) with at least two different wave lengths (like 254 and 365 nm, please don't forget it use eye protection).

Like this one:

Everything else are just play tools and nothing serious.

I add a photo, this is how you can use such a lamp to differ 1st / 2nd print:

I have about five different UV lamps at this point. All with different strengths and drawbacks.

But at home, I find a good Geology UV lamp best. It has both a SWUV filter and a different LWUV filter. Heavy and plug in, so not portable, but gives good results. I have not found a good one to take to shows and with portability.

There are many listed on eBay and Amazon, but might I also suggest stamp suppliers like Subway www.subwaystamp.com or some of the companies who supply the mineral and gem trade. I do not collect currency, but UV security precautions are quite important there, so that also might give you some sources.
